Congratulations to the winner of the 2013  Battle of the Stands, Mocha Moose Express (South Cushman)!

Welcome to the Battle of the Stands, where we find out which coffee cart is YOUR favorite.

How it works:

1. It’s a randomized single elimination tournament (think NCAA without the regions) in which 4 battles are fought each week.

2. You can vote once a day in each battle, with each Round running from Monday morning through the end of the day on Sunday.

[UPDATE: The final round will last for 2 weeks!]

3. At the end of each week, check back to see the results and vote in the next Round.

4. As the tournament goes on, winners will meet other winners from previous Rounds, so make sure you come back and help your favorite get to the Championship Round!

And that’s not all! Each day that you vote, you have the chance to be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to whatever coffee cart reigns supreme at the end of this madness, so vote early and vote often, just enter your email address in Battle #1!

Thanks Bonita! It was an honor to compete along side such amazing huts such as CCH, Mocha Dans and all who participated :) For being such a small community, Fairbanks sure does love their coffee!!! …and, it is evident by the amount of positive comments and overwhelming votes, that Fairbanks is not short on excellent coffee huts! Thank you everyone for the support and friendly feedback, we will definitely use this opportunity to finds ways to better serve our customers. -Mocha Moose management & staff

Power of the vote right there.

Since Mocha Moose technically already won, kind of a bummer it wasn’t one of the others, I guess I’ll vote for which would be the most convenient location if I actually won the coffee card (yes I know it could be used at either location). Still love both Mocha Dan’s and College Coffee!!!

Personally I have never heard of mocha moose and same with people I’ve talked to as well. Funny how CCH and mocha dans would go up and as soon as that happened mocha moose would be ahead minutes later. Something isn’t right I believe collusion is going on.

There were thousands of votes on both sides, and while this isn’t the big final clash we hoped for either (more competition = more fun!), it is how the votes tallied.

Although I’m sure Mocha Moose is good, their ability to strangely get both of their locations to the last round does not keep Mocha Dans and CCH from being two of the best coffee carts in town.

I frequently get a morning or afternoon coffee from Mocha Moose Express on Badger. The coffee is always great. Some coffee stands don’t give you the coffee requested, i.e. you ask for a quad shot mocha and receive something much weaker. Their customer service is fabulous, always smiling and joking. On occasion I and my wife would drive thru, I would be wearing silicone breast. Instead of receiving sarcastic smirks, I receive compliments and light jokes comparing the size to their own. If the staff were switched out I fear it wouldn’t have the positive comments that it does now.

most of these comments that are rude and nasty about other stands are comments made from the girls working at other huts trying to get themselves votes. the girls talking bad and posting it go around bragging about it to. its funny how nothing bad is really said about stands other than mocha moose. jelous girls?

I’m beginning to wonder if the two week voting period is too long. I find it VERY hard to believe that all 4 stands are in equal standing. The outcome is going to be very interesting.

Thanks for your feedback. This is a new venture for us, so we’ll take these things into consideration for next time. As far as the carts having equal standing, some of the week long battles ended even more closely than this one!

Everytime I have gone to Mocha Moose it has been gross, I’m not a coffee drinker, but every kicker I’ve ever had from there has way to much syrup, and isn’t mixed at all. You can literally see the syrup floating in the bottom of the cup like oil. Not impressed. I would much rather go to Mocha Dans.

I am a food safety trainer for the National Restaurant Association ServSafe Program and travel all over Alaska teaching food safety. I stop going to food service businesses that aren’t clean, the staff have hair that plunges into my drink or food when they prepare it or serve it, or I find hair in or on my product. College Coffee is clean, their staff are tidy, I don’t find hair in locations it shouldn’t be, and most importantly the managers ask me to keep them informed of any improvements they need to make. When I have brought any issue to them they have responded quickly and provided retraining to staff. They actually provide all of their staff with food safety training so they are educated, not just robots.
I am a picky coffee consumer with a Culinary Arts degree. I appreciate the mexican bean choice for my latte, I don’t like dark roast coffee which has less caffeine than light roast. I have NEVER gotten a bad drink or food from them in 2 years!
Thank you College Coffee for holding high standards and for responding to customer feedback!!! Keep setting the professional standard in Fairbanks!!!

College Coffeehut not only reuses your drink cup, but gives you a 10% discount! And if you’re a student up at the UAF we also give you another 10% off your drink!

    1. Matt

No Coffeehut should be re-using cups, that can be a violation of health code due to safety concerns related to the possible breakdown of the materials the cups are made of and also that used cups are not sanitary. Travel Mugs are not a risk as far as the possible breakdown of materials, but they can be a health risk in that they are not always clean, so in turn are not sanitary. If the Baristas are not handling a Travel Mug with gloves on, then there is the possibility of spreading diseases especially if they don’t wash their hands immediately after handling it. Also if a Travel Mug is placed on any surface or comes in contact with any equipment within a Coffeehut that surface or equipment needs to be sanitized immediately after. I was very curious about this question so asked a friend who works for the State of Alaska Food Safety.

It is true we offer a 10% discount with any student ID. However, the discount for reusing your cup is 20 cents off, not 10%.

      Reply
  15. Amanda

I stopped going to Mocha Moose when they refused to let me reuse my cup. What is the difference between a used paper cup, and a used “travel mug?” Nothing, irritating!! Was done.

    Reply
    1. Glen

Just a thought, but it could be a liability reason. Paper cups deteriorate over time since they are not designed to be reused and could leak hot product onto a consumer. Travel mugs on the other hand are designed to be used over and over.

      Reply
    2. Jasminne

Mocha moose has no problem using travel mugs we always accept travel mugs as long as they are clean and sanitary. We are not alowed to take trash or dirty mugs because that would violate health codes. Just trying to stay clean, I’m sorry you had a bad expierience with us!

I have been to most of the Coffee Huts in Fairbanks/North Pole but I don’t drink coffee. I love hot chocolate and am very fussy, but there are very few places including but not limited to College Coffeehut and Mocha Dan’s that make a weak hot chocolate. I am not saying it is horrible but just not enough flavor for someone that is a Chocoholic. My favorite place to go is no longer in the running but second to them are the Mocha Moose stands. Plus they always remember that I don’t like Whipped Cream.

To be honest, I think mocha moose on cushman is no good at all. Every time I’ve gone there they never failed to mess up my drink. I would have to ask several times for them to make.it sweeter or to remake the whole thing. And the girls there don’t seem happy to serve customers and they dont seem to care if im happy with my drink or not. Plus they have no food there! Just hotpockets and jim beam sausage sandwich, which i can jusy buy at the local store. Its not gery special or unique if you can get it anywhere. They have good blueberry muffins..

They were.never really that friendly and didnt seem to care about whether or not I liked my drink. And they have no food items really. Hot pockets and a Jim beam sausage sandwich I can get at thestore myself. That doesn’t make it special if I can get it elsewhere. And the coffee wasny very good either.

I don’t mean to be a party pooper here, but even though College Coffeehouse is the most convenient coffee hut for me, I avoid going there! I’ve probably been half a dozen times and it’s been very inconsistent and often not that great (watery coffee/espresso drinks, toasted sandwich wrap with warmed up wilty lettuce (ick), and the cupcake I bought was about $4 and really stale!). I do agree the girls working there are friendly. With all of these positive reviews – and the fact that it’s made it into the quarterfinals – I will definitely give it another chance.

Perhaps you caught them on a few bad day, we all have those!
I would hate to be judged by my most random worst day, but in business this happens all the time! I do know that their cupcake maker makes them fresh every day, and they sell out fast, I can barely get there when they have them! They use fresh ingredients like grandma, which tends to make a denser cupcake, not like todays store bought frozen & unfrozen ones full of preservatives and who knows what else.
I love their fresh made to order breakfast sandwiches, they are head over heels above the rest! I’ve never had a wrap, but i understand they are made fresh to order as well.
It’s refreshing to hear someone have an open mind and give it another chance, kuddos to you for that! So many people tend to stay in negative ruts on limited experiences.

Wow, thanks for the thoughtful responses everyone. I did go to College Coffeehut this week (I work about 1/2 mile from there), and got my usual plain latte (I’m not into any of the sweet flavoring stuff) and an egg & cheese bagel sandwich. I was super impressed that the cheese options were cheddar and pepper jack (hooray, no american cheese!) and my bagel was really tasty. The latte was also good, except scalding hot and I burned my tongue on the first sip, but hey. I will be going back.

    With all due respect Fairbanksalaska.com.

me & my entire class casted votes for our fav coffee cart everyday last week & the score has not changed not even a little. It was alot of votes especially at once.. We have done it in the past battles & it moved up as it should of.. Think this is normal? Or rigged?

    Reply
    1. FairbanksAlaska.com Post author

The first vote cast each day from a unique IP address is counted; this is the way we limit the voting so that a single person can’t run up the votes.

It’s entirely possible that while you and your class were voting for your favorite, another group or number of individuals were doing the same for the opposing stand.

Alternatively, the battle that you’re voting on now may have much higher participation than the previous battle in which your favorite was competing. It will take many more votes to effect the percentages if there are a higher number of total votes in that battle.

It’s impossible to know which of the many possible explanations would answer your question without more information, but I can promise that there is absolutely nothing rigged about the Challenge.

Thanks for voting, keep at it!

I share a computer with my spouse. If she gets to vote before I get on, it won’t let me vote. It seems that each person should be able to vote each day/ We both buy our coffee separately.

Hi Randy. The only good way that we can limit voting to once per day is by ip address, which unfortunately means once per computer. Without this built in safeguard, people could vote as many times as they wanted (since you are able to vote anonymously). I hope that you can switch off so that you can both support your respective stands. Thanks!

Thanks for not starting round 5 today, we really appreciate the inconsistency. Nothi g is more frustrating than tardiness & preparing for an event that the host failed to put on during the appropriate time frame.

Personally the only places to get good service and good coffee are Mojo To Go & Mocha Dans. Who ever said Mocha Moose was a beauty pageant, well you should start writing some material and do stand up cause that was funny!

i LOVE espresso yourself!! stop there often on my way to work. Friendliest Baristas and great coffee and food. On the other hand I will NEVER go to sunrise again!! after ordering a wrap and having freezing cold chicken in the middle then today they got my order completely wrong…I will never ever go back there.

Fairbanks espresso is truly the best stand in Fairbanks. The only problem they have is that there are a few new girls that aren’t as good as the usual ones. The best time to get the best coffee is in the morning. Once the newer girls come on in the afternoon I stop drinking coffee for the day.

I love Fairbanks Espresso!! Their drinks are consistent and the girls are super awesome. I owned my own drive thru for many years and thought I’d never find a coffee box to take its place. Well I did, and if you haven’t been thru there, do it!!

Fairbanks expresso is the ONLY coffee hut I will go too! I love there prices, food and coffee but most importantly my M-F GIRLS! I have tried many other coffee huts and my coffee taste bad or it is so small for the prices! I love pulling up to Fairbanks expresso and they either have my order already ready or they just ask if i want the usual! I am truly going to miss these girls and my amazing white chocolate breves with Carmel when I move!!!

Fairbanks Espresso ALL the way! The ladies are so nice there and go out of their way to make you feel welcomed. Some baristas at other places make you feel like you are a bother or try to rush you. Not at Fairbanks Espresso!

They know my name and what I want! The prices are good and my coffee is always the same! WONDERFUL! They have my vote %100. I also love that they have almond and soy milk for those who can’t have regular milk! Thanks for all you do!

My vote is for Espresso Yourself!! I used to go to Sunrise but their prices kept going up and my coffee was never consistent… It was only a vanilla mocha :) I tried Espresso Yourself on Geist and I was hooked! Best coffee I have ever tasted, very friendly service, consistency, and good prices! Hope they win!

Fairbanks Espresso wins my vote! I will seriously drive across town to get their coffee if I have to because it is the best I have tasted. They use genuine cocoa powder for mochas and white chocolate powder for white mochas instead of that gross syrup stuff most stands use. They steam their milk to a perfect silky texture and they will run out of the stand to get customers orders when there is a line.

Fairbanks espresso is by far the best coffee stand in Fairbanks North Pole area. I live out of town and I will get up an hour earlier just to get coffee from them. They make it a point to know your name and drink. They remember the things that you tell them. They miss you when your gone. Not to mention the very best coffee I have ever had. And I have been to them all.

The baristas at Fairbanks Espresso are not only the most polite and friendly I’ve ever come across, but also the most caring. Not only do they recall customers by their usual drinks, but also by name. I have personally seen these girls go the extra mile and jump a customers vehicle in the freezing winter weather and have also seen them push a customers dead truck to a safe parking area. Fairbanks Espresso hands down for the best and cheapest coffee as well as just all around good people.

Forget-Me-Not coffee has the absolute best Mocha in town. I only once had a problem and that was with a brand new barrista several years ago. I phoned up and they immediately made it right. It is the only stand worth making a detour to get to. Their staff are always friendly and remember exactly what I want. They also use the best chocolate in town for anyone who is a chocoholic and they support local causes. Hands-down they are the best and if you haven’t given them a try, you absolutely should. you will not regret it.

Forget-me-not Espresso once charged me $3 for a cold bagel and left the cream cheese in the package. They didn’t ask if I wanted it spread on the bagel or if I wanted the bagel heated up. I can’t imagine why someone would go to a drive thru, if they had the time to spread the cream cheese in their car. Seriously $3 for a cold bagel, if I wanted to throw away my money I would have just put it in the trash. I will never give them my business again.

Dear fbxmom, As the owner of Forget Me Not Espresso I feel obligated to reply to your post. I am sorry you were not happy and I do wish you would have brought your complaint to myself or my great staff’s attention, as we would have made it right. It is not our policy to serve cold bagels, as we have a hot toaster oven, but we have in the past served the cream cheese on the side which many customers have preferred as they can take it to work or put on any amount they like. I know that the wonderful people of Fairbanks are passionate about their coffee stands and choose different favorites for a number of reasons. Having been in the coffee business for over 12+ years, I think it’s great and keeps us all going! Let all keep this in friendly competition and thanks FairbanksAlaska.com for putting this together!

I’m definitely a fan of MoJo to Go, located on the 3rd Street side of the intersection of Steese and 3rd and Minnie.
Not only do the barista really know their craft, making an excellent cup of coffee, but the stand is situated in an area convenient for foot traffic. Being an avid walker, I find it very easy to walk up to the window and order my daily cup of coffee.

I may be too late, but I definitely think Forget-Me-Not Espresso is the best. Your website did not state when this contest or what date it ends. Your murky flow chart seem to indicate that you are close to the end. Nevertheless I put my vote in for F-M-N Espresso.

Hi Kathy. We’ve only just begun the competition, each week there will be a new round of voting in the single elimination tournament until we’re down to one winner!

Forget-Me-Not is coming up next week, so if you come back on Monday (and every day next week), you can cast your vote for them. If they win their battle, they’ll move on to the next round.

The competition will run for 9 weeks, so check back often to see how FMN fares in each round.

I do not understand why ALL the huts were notified nor why Sunrise gets an entry for every location..rigged? Also, who is providing this $100 to purchase the gift card from the hut?

    Reply
    1. Lauren Hatty

Not rigged! We made a list of all of the huts and then randomized them – no human interaction, it’s just the luck of the draw.

The prize is coming from us, the company who runs this website, 907 Group. We are a media firm and this site is a product of our company.

      Thanks for stopping by!

I agree with several comments. As a stand manager, we should have been notified we would be participating in this even as well as it seems unfair that Sunrise gets 7 stands in the bracket. That definitly raises their chances of winnning…….Just saying….

It’s every stand for themselves in the Battle of the Stands and coffee drinkers have loyalty to specific locations, even within the same chain!
