The Artist

April Knox is an award-winning artist and has over 19 years of experience oil painting. April lives in Fairbanks Alaska and is known for her landscape paintings that capture daily life in and around interior Alaska throughout the year. She loves to paint light and how it changes throughout the seasons. She has exhibited in juried exhibitions including Oil Painters of America, Salon International, 64th Parallel, Hoosier Salon, and Indiana Heritage Arts. Currently, her work can be found at aprilknoxart.com, in Fairbanks at 2 Street Gallery, Roaming Root Cellar, and the Bear Gallery Gift shop, also in Nashville Indiana at The Brown County Art Gallery. April’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Indiana State Museum, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Central Insurance Company, and many private collections.

The Workshop

This five-week oil painting course is designed for artists of all levels, offering a structured yet flexible approach to learning. Each session includes short lectures, demonstrations, handouts, and personalized instruction to help students build confidence in oil painting.

Throughout the course, April will guide students through fundamental techniques such as values, atmospheric perspective, composition, and color theory. Each week builds on the last, ensuring a solid foundation in the painting process from start to finish.

To ensure quality individual instruction, the class is limited to eight participants. Students are responsible for bringing their own painting supplies.

5-Week Course Schedule

WEEK 1: Mastering Your Materials

Get comfortable with your oil painting supplies and explore the power of a limited palette. Learn how to control color temperature and value to create depth and harmony in your work.

WEEK 2: Creating Depth with Atmospheric Perspective

Discover techniques to add distance and atmosphere to your paintings, making landscapes feel vast and immersive.

WEEK 3: Capturing the Beauty of Snow

Learn how to paint snow with richness and dimension, using light, shadow, and color to bring winter scenes to life.

WEEK 4: Painting a Dynamic Sky

Skies set the mood of a painting—whether soft and serene or bold and dramatic. This week, focus on movement, color shifts, and cloud formations.

WEEK 5: Water and Reflections

Explore how to paint the ever-changing qualities of water, from shimmering reflections to flowing rivers, adding depth and realism to your landscapes.

The Space

Gather is a vibrant community and social space in downtown Fairbanks, designed to inspire creativity and connection. Located at 714 3rd Avenue, its modern and inviting atmosphere provides the perfect setting for artistic exploration. With ample space, natural light, and a welcoming environment, it’s an ideal place to learn, create, and grow. Classes meet from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, offering a relaxed and focused setting for oil painting.
