A message from the artist:
This particular body of work had its beginnings back in 1998. Know the name, Bob Ross? I had watched Mr. Ross on KUAC TV as he painted a beautiful mountain scene with happy little clouds and happy little trees and the obligatory waterfall/pond. He made it look so easy. I thought, “I can do that. After all, how hard can it be?”
Today, after 25 years of painting almost daily, I can tell you it takes a lot of time and effort and materials and failures and so on. I still paint stinkers on occasion.
That being said, Bob Ross and I share some common ground. Both he and I were U.S. Air Force medics. Both he and I love Alaska and found a way to share that absolute joy and infatuation with our Alaska and all that she offers in the 4 seasons that we experience.
What is before you included in this exhibition is a sampling of my views of Alaska from around the State. Valdez, Hope, the Turnagain Arm, along with many views of the Alaska Range and the Interior.
Other paintings included in this show are paintings I have done from Sydney Laurence’s work found online. By looking at and pondering his work that focused on atmosphere and light, I learned to make them two key components of my paintings of “My Alaska.”
I hope you enjoy the exhibition and my stories on canvas give you pleasure.
Thank you,
Tom Nixon
