Before closing on purchase of Nome’s historic and then-somewhat dilapidated Discovery Saloon building in 2002, the new owner – Carol Gales – was already applying for historic preservation funds. Thus began a decade of grant management and exterior restoration work on Nome’s oldest-known gold rush structure, all guided by simultaneous research that uncovered the building’s forgotten history. Come learn about this unique building and the challenges of completing historic preservation work in a remote, sub-arctic community.
