This class will give participants an opportunity to learn heat control with a Dutch Oven using charcoal. We will learn to judge the amount of heat to place below the oven and on top of the oven. Safety issues include awareness of fire, hot cast metal ovens, and charcoal-laden metal tables with attention to the use of hot pads, gloves, and appropriate clothing.
Working in groups of two, students will cook two or more items: scratch biscuits and cinnamon rolls or a loaf of bread. While mastering heat control with the Dutch Oven is the main objective of the course, we will also gain confidence in baking scratch biscuits, cinnamon rolls, and breads. The experience is intended to provide confidence in the added fun a Dutch Oven brings to the outdoor experience.
1st Item: Biscuits
2nd Item: Choose one: Cinnamon Rolls, Basque Beer Bread, or Yeast bread
Ages 8 to adult (ages 8 – 12 require a co-learning adult also registered in the class)
Location: The Folk School – Pioneer Park Outdoors behind the main Cabin.
