Combine the arts of painting, drawing, and writing!
This is a class for ages 12 and up – for teachers, students, and creative thinkers of any kind.
In this class we will explore the basic elements of visual arts and linguistic expressions, how you can use them to deeply explore a topic and how they can strengthen each other. We will realize how many choices we have in expressing our thoughts and learn new ways to choose.
The physical take-home part of this class is a folded book with 6 pages, with each page showing what we learned.
We will decide on a class theme (anything goes) that we work on all together. Everyone will also pick their own personal theme that they will work on in class and at home.
Through games and exercises we will learn how to pick a word with the right sound, rhythm and meaning and discuss how to put this word on our colored paper with the right line, placement and proportion. We will continue with making choices first for sentence, then text style and shape, and then the overall shape of our presentation.
Topics we will cover are: principles of art (color, line, shape, texture, value, space, form) and elements of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement pattern, rhythm, unity), which all are reflected in the elements of verbal/written expression (sound, word, sentence, text).
We will learn about brainstorming and water-color techniques, we will make rubber stamps and stencils, we’ll dress up and write down, do speech exercises, dissect a word and be philosophers.
You will emerge from this class with a broad set of new understandings and life skills.
